Search for the identity of stolen children, 50 years after the coup in Argentina

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état led by Lieutenant General Jorge Rafael Videla against the Argentine government of María Estela Martínez de Perón on March 24, 1976, the Cineclub IMPACTE! Debates for Peace and Human Rights presents Revelar, by Fermín Rivera, a documentary that explores the clues and premonitions about their real identity experienced by the children who were kidnapped during the bloodiest dictatorship in Argentine history.

The dictatorship of the Military Junta (1976-1983) caused thousands of deaths, 30,000 disappeared people, and nearly half a million exiles. One of the most sinister events, however, was the appropriation of 500 newborns in captivity and infants of women who were detained and mostly made to disappear, and handed over with complete impunity to families loyal to the regime. To date, thanks to the work of the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, 140 people have managed to recover their identity, find out what happened to them, who their biological parents were, and locate their respective families.

As one of the protagonists says, Revelar (2024), directed by Femín Rivera, does not follow the usual thread of documentaries about child abductions. It seeks out and finds other narratives, which have nothing to do with the events of the stories of the returned grandchildren, but rather with the way identity is constructed from small clues that give us hints about what it means to be the sons and daughters of our parents, and how our lineage becomes present and evident in us when we learn the truth.

The struggle of the victims and survivors of the Argentine dictatorship is similar in some respects to that of the mothers and relatives of the babies stolen in Catalonia during the Franco dictatorship and part of the democracy. Therefore, the session will bring the topic closer to our own reality.
