“Emperors of Nothing” takes an immersive look at life in a Brussels prison, infamous for its inhumane incarceration conditions. Bearing witness to how the human spirit resists or submits to this harsh world, the film reveals the vulnerabilities and aspirations of humanity as it faces the challenge of resisting its own negation.
Cédric Gerbehaye
Belgian documentary photographer and filmmaker, born in Brussels in 1977. Focusing on the human condition and human rights, his projects explore places both foreign and familiar places. He has spent the last two decades pushing the boundaries of his visual storytelling practice, navigating between long-term photo essays, web documentary and feature film. A founding member of MAPS Agency, he is the author of the books “Congo in Limbo”, “Land of Cush”, “Sète#13” and “D’entre eux”. His work has received several international awards including The Olivier Rebbot Award from the Overseas Press Club of America, a World Press Photo and the Amnesty International Media Award and is regularly exhibited abroad in festivals. His photographs are in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi, MEP – Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris and the FoMu – FotoMuseum in Antwerp. Cédric Gerbehaye is a contributor to National Geographic Magazine. His series ZOONOSE on the pandemic received the Lucas Dolega International Award. In 2022, he became an Explorer for the National Geographic Society and continued his work in Kashmir.
