SYNOPSIS

“Negrers. La Catalunya esclavista” explains how during a large part of the 19th century, Catalonia transported tens of thousands of African slaves to sell and exploit them in America, especially to the island of Cuba. Although human trafficking had been forbidden since 1820, hundreds of Catalan slave traders continued to engage in this activity illegally. Apart from the owners of the plantations, hundreds of traders, investors, ship owners, sailors and all kinds of workers were involved. From Begur to Tarragona, many towns along the Catalan coast have been linked to the slave trade. Despite the evidence, the slave trade continues, at home, buried in dememory.
