Following the murder of Núria López, a kitchen worker at Mas d’Enric at the hands of an inmate, several days of protest by Catalan prison officials have taken place in the last month. The demonstrations have materialized through the blocking of the entrance and exit of the premises, causing a violation of the rights of prisoners, who are confined to their cells, with their permits to leave, communication with family members and medical or judicial appointments being altered.

The national prison system today faces a series of critical challenges that require urgent attention and action. The walls of prisons do not only keep inmates from the outside, but also an entire oppressive and abusive machinery that endangers the rights of inmates and contributes to their marginalization and stigmatization.

In this context, it is necessary to explore new dimensions and institutional policies that offer effective solutions and, above all, promote a more just and humanitarian prison system.

To introduce the screening’s round table, we will screen the documentary La Peine. Emperors of Nothing , as part of the program of IMPACTE! Human Rights Film Festival of Catalonia.

Between 1949 and 1952, during the socialist Yugoslavia of Josip Broz Tito, more than 600 Yugoslav women, most of them loyal communists, were imprisoned, humiliated and tortured on the island of Šagargur. Likewise, in Catalonia, during the Franco regime, the prison of Les Corts (1939-1959), and later the prison of La Trinitat (1963-1983), became the main institutions of repression against women during that period, imprisoning trade unionists, university students, neighborhood activists, among many other dissidents of the dictatorship. On the other hand, in 1941 Franco’s regime created the Patronato de Protección a la Mujer, a system of repression and control that punished women who defied patriarchal values and moral norms imposed by the dictatorship until 1985. These are realities that bear witness to a fundamental part of the history of Yugoslavia and Spain, but which have been condemned to marginalization and consigned to oblivion, perpetuating a skewed vision of the world.

In order to guarantee a democratic and egalitarian society it is necessary to build historical memory from a gender perspective, incorporating the visions and struggles led by women in times of repression. It is through this act of justice and reparation that it will be possible to challenge the dominant narratives that exclude women’s views and build a complete and inclusive history.

To introduce the screening’s round table, we will screen the documentary Saint Gregory, as part of the program of IMPACTE! Human Rights Film Festival of Catalonia.

The Catalan production of documentaries has had a spectacular development during the last 20 years, reaching a renown level of professionalism in the international sector. While at first local themes dominated almost exclusively, the constant professionalization of directors and producers has allowed them to tackle more distant and ambitious subjects.

In this session, after the screening of Aamelat. Day labourers of war and The Painter’s Room, we will discuss the case of two recent productions of two young filmmakers who have been able to find their way in two remote and, a priori, not very easy environments: a refugee camp in Lebanon and a Foreigner Detention Centre in Denmark. The directors and their respective producers will explain how they have gained access to these highly protected areas, and the confidence of their protagonists.

SPEAKERS

With the participation of:

  • EVA PAREY: Director of Aamelat. Day labourers of war.

  • SANDRA FORN: Co-producer of Aamelat. Day labourers of war (Els Films de l’Orient).

  • MARIA COLOMER CANYELLES: Director of The Painter’s Room.

  • MONTSE PUJOL SOLÀ: Producer of The Painter’s Room (Boogaloo Films).

Extractivism is the new colonialism. The presence of large multinationals dedicated to mining, gas and oil extraction, or the construction of power plants in the Global South has not only meant the destruction and appropriation of the territory’s natural resources, but also the unleashing of large waves of violence against the civilian population.

In response to corporate occupation and impunity, thousands of defenders of the environment and the land respond through resistance, putting their lives on the front line and feeling the victims of a systemic persecution. Threats, assaults and assassinations have become the price to pay for all those who risk their lives to protect their people and ensure the survival of the planet.

To introduce the screening’s round table, we will screen the documentary The Illusion of Abundance, as part of the program of IMPACTE! Human Rights Film Festival of Catalonia.

Israeli repression against the Palestinian people

Since 1967, Israel has been applying a policy of occupation, discrimination and extermination against the Palestinian people, who in recent months have been victims of an unprecedented genocide led by President Netanyahu and with the complicity of a large part of the international community. However, the violence of the State of Israel is not only manifested through bombings, persecutions and assassinations, but it also uses its prisons as a weapon of repression to spread fear and insecurity among the Palestinian population.

According to the latest data from the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society, since October 7, 2023, 3,000 Palestinians have been detained, 2,000 of them under administrative detention, which allows Israeli authorities to detain a person for months or years without having to file charges against them or set a court date. On the other hand, these irregular detentions are accompanied by constant episodes of torture, humiliation and all kinds of degrading treatment that represent a gross violation of human rights. Many of the Palestinians held inside the walls of Israeli prisons are in total isolation with restrictions on water, light and food. Likewise, they are denied the right to leave when medical attention is required and to communicate with lawyers or family members.

To introduce the screening’s round table, we will screen the documentary Caça de fantasmes, as part of the program of IMPACTE! Human Rights Film Festival of Catalonia.
