Synopsis

The Iranian director is forced to emigrate to her own private “planet” to be free. She buys other people’s memories in the form of Super 8 mm films, as well as records and archives her own memories with her cell phone, in order to create an alternative history of Iran while highlighting the struggle for women’s emancipation within the Women Life Freedom movement.

Farahnaz Sharifi is an award-winning Iranian filmmaker and film editor who was forced to go into exile at the end of 2022. She graduated from Tehran University in Cinema Studies. Her films are mostly based on archives, and she uses archival images and film to tell her stories. Farahnaz is also a well known film-editor in Iran. Her recent work as an editor is the acclaimed documentary film Radiograph of a Family which won the Best Feature Length Documentary Film Award at IDFA in 2020, as well as an award for the creative use of archival content. Farahnaz has received many awards inside and outside of Iran, including Best Film at Uppsala Short Film Festival. In addition, she was a jury member at IDFA 2021. Beside her career as a filmmaker and editor, she is also a writer. Her book of short stories Breathing in Open Air has been published in Iran.
